aikyam’s storytelling-residency workshop

My experience at aikyam's story telling workshop

A much needed retreat!

This two-day workshop at aikyam space did more than delve into the intricacies and nuances of storytelling - it provided a sense of belonging in its positive setting. This workshop has enabled me to approach problem-solving considering the impact-power equation. Various sessions included in the programme clearly conveyed the process, tools and the thinking required to do storytelling. Read how this space gave me a much needed push to hone my storytelling skills.

When I packed for this two-day residency workshop, I thought of it as just another official engagement. However, the moment I stepped into Thulasi Towers, I knew I was in for something different. I was welcomed by the most happy faces with roots and leaves on it. While Anjani gave me a tour of the space, my eyes were drawn to the tasteful collection of books and the well-organised workspace.

I got to meet some amazing individuals, also known as ‘aikyam fellows’. Though I had been connected with most of them online for quite some time, getting to know them in person felt wonderful. Later that night, a stroll through the streets of Panampilli Nagar and some alone time with aikyam’s collection of books gave me the perfect ‘me-time’ to relish.

Now, I have a new entry on my manifestation list—‘my space’.

On the first day of residency, I had my first in-person meeting with my CDF STEM Femmes. Spending time with the STEM Femmes and witnessing their passion and commitment towards the project gave me a renewed sense of hope and positivity. At the same time, the withdrawal of one of the most promising candidates underscored the importance of drawing more women into the workforce and helping them overcome barriers.

The CDF STEM Femme Fellowship is one of the projects I am leading as part of my affiliation with Citizen Digital Foundation. Through this initiative, we aim to bring more women into the paid workforce by providing specific digital skills training through CDF STEM Femme Fellows and then mapping them to suitable employment opportunities.

As the session started, Sumi took us through various activities that conveyed different levels of impact on storytelling - Discoverability, visibility, engagement and impact. The empathy chat helped me to know more about my fellows and the need for active listening. The session was overall engaging and made us realise that primary and secondary stakeholders for an organisation may vary from the primary and secondary stakeholders of their website.

An activity to analyse stakeholder relations

I had an interesting conversation with Sumi about the glorified ‘working mums’ narrative—something beyond the scope of the workshop. The introduction to the Ghost platform by Megha, an engaging discussion with Shemeer on the challenges faced by Fellows, and a technical talk with Jinso all made the workshop a power-packed experience. Of all the sessions, the session on content is the one I am looking forward to the most. I hope it will give me the impetus to overcome my creative block.

Thank you aikyam fellows for organising a lovely session.
